When the catalogue does not fit

The BL-SFSM tailor-made Finnish sauna exists for the spaces no standard model can occupy: a loft with a sloping roof, an alcove under the stairs, an attic room, an awkward corner, a bathroom to be converted. Instead of fitting the room around the product, we build the product around the room.

It is not a flat-pack kit and not a prefabricated cabin cut down to size: it is a sauna designed on the real dimensions of the space, with the lava-stone stove sized on the volume it has to heat. Custom-built for indoor and outdoor installation.

What size should a sauna be

This is always the first question, and the answer rests on three things:

• How many people at once: allow roughly one metre of bench per seated person, more if you want to be able to lie down
• The height: heat stratifies upwards, so it matters as much as the floor area. Too tall and the cabin wastes heat, too low and there is no room for an upper bench
• The overall volume, which determines the stove power this is the real technical constraint, and the reason there is no single correct size

Built to measure means exactly this: not choosing between three standard sizes, but starting from the centimetres you actually have. Shapes that do not exist in any catalogue a long narrow cabin, one with a sloping ceiling, one that is not rectangular in plan are all buildable.

How it is built, step by step

• You send us the measurements, or just a few photographs: enough for us to tell you whether the project is feasible and to give a first indication of price
• Design and quotation: dimensions, bench layout, timber, door type, stove power
• Handcrafted construction in our workshop in Italy, to those measurements
• Delivery in sections, sized to pass through the access you have

What we need from you is more precise than a rough idea of the room. Width, length and height at the highest and lowest point; the position of the power supply; where the door has to open; and any beam, pipe or step that intrudes into the space. Photographs from two opposite corners tell us more than a description. If a measurement is uncertain, say so rather than rounding it: we would rather ask a question than build to the wrong figure.

How much does a tailor-made Finnish sauna cost

The quotation is built on five variables:

• The dimensions and volume of the cabin: this is what weighs most
• The lava-stone stove, whose power follows from that volume
• The timber and the finishes
• The door: full glass, part glass, or timber-framed
• The accessories: lighting, headrests, bucket and ladle, thermometer and hygrometer

Delivery is quoted separately, because it depends on the exact address.

Indoors or outdoors

The BL-SFSM can be built indoors and outdoors, and the difference is not only where it stands:

• Indoors the constraints are ventilation and the power supply point; no water connection is required
• Outdoors the cladding materials and protective treatments change, because the cabin is exposed to damp and to swings in temperature

For hotels, B&Bs and wellness centres

In hospitality a bespoke build is often the only workable route: the available spaces are what they are, and a standard cabin would mean abandoning the project altogether. Building to the existing measurements turns a room that would otherwise stay unused into a wellness area.

What changes compared with a domestic installation:

• The sizing starts from the number of guests to be served at the same time
• The stove has to be chosen for continuous use, not for two sessions a week
• Materials and finishes have to withstand a far higher frequency of use
• All our products are CE compliant and covered by a 2-year warranty
