Here is what actually happens to your body at 37 °C, which benefits hold up and which are marketing, and above all when you should not get in. That last part matters most, and it is the part wellness articles almost always skip.
What heat does: circulation and muscle
Immersing yourself in water at 37 or 38 °C causes peripheral vasodilation: the surface blood vessels widen, blood flows towards the skin and resistance to flow drops. It is the same mechanism as a hot bath, amplified by the fact that the immersion is total.
On muscle the effect is direct: heat reduces resting muscle tone and increases the elasticity of connective tissue. This is why a tub at 37 °C works better after sport than one at 40: the point is to relax a body that has already worked, not to heat it further.

Water pressure and swollen legs
This is the most solid benefit and the least talked about. Water exerts pressure that increases with depth, so it is greater on your ankles and calves than on your chest. That gradient pushes fluid pooled in the lower limbs back towards the centre of the body, where the lymphatic system and the kidneys deal with it.
In practice: if you are on your feet all day and your ankles swell by evening, twenty minutes of immersion makes a difference you can feel. It is not a lasting effect, and that should be said: the swelling returns if the cause remains. But the relief is real, with a clear physical mechanism behind it.
Jets add localised massage that supports venous return. On models with adjustable jets, aiming them at calves and the soles of the feet from below upwards is the correct approach: you follow the direction the blood needs to travel, not the reverse.
Buoyancy: joints and back
In water your apparent body weight drops sharply: immersed to the neck, an adult carries a small fraction of their own weight. Knees, hips and spine work unloaded, which is why aquatic rehabilitation has existed for decades.

Here I go against a lot of what gets written, including in articles of our own from a few years ago.
It does not make you lose weight. The weight you drop after a session is water lost through sweating, and it comes back with your first drink. The calorie cost of passive immersion is modest, and no credible mechanism turns heat into fat loss. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling, not explaining.
It does not remove cellulite. Improved microcirculation can temporarily reduce the fluid retention component, and that is visible. But the structure of adipose tissue does not change because of heat, and the effect fades.
It does not replace treatment. For osteoarthritis and chronic pain a hot tub offers symptomatic relief that many people find useful, and the hydrotherapy literature supports it within those limits. It does not alter the course of a condition, and anyone with a diagnosis should discuss regular use with their doctor first.
The honest position is that the real benefits are the physical ones described above, and they are enough to justify the purchase without promises that do not hold.
When you should not get in
This is the part that matters most, and some conditions rule it out entirely.
Do not get in with severe heart disease or heart failure, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe low blood pressure, arrhythmia, uncontrolled epilepsy, poorly controlled diabetes, severe kidney failure, a fever above 37.5 °C, an active infection, surgery within the last three months, or venous thrombosis.
During pregnancy you need your doctor's explicit consent. It is a case of its own, with specific considerations around core body temperature and trimester, and it is not settled by one line in a list: ask your obstetrician, who knows how your pregnancy is progressing.
Alcohol and medication are the point people miss. Do not get in after alcohol, sedatives or sleeping tablets: heat-driven vasodilation adds its effects to those of the substance, and the risk of low blood pressure and loss of consciousness rises. If you take anticoagulants, antihypertensives, diuretics or anything that affects temperature regulation, ask your doctor before your first session.

How to prepare for a session
Four things that change the outcome, and none of them costs anything.
Not on a full stomach. After a large meal digestion draws blood to the gut while heat draws it to the surface: the two compete. Wait a couple of hours.

Drink before and after. You sweat even while sitting in water, and you do not notice. Half a litre before and the same afterwards is a simple rule that prevents the headache many people blame on the tub itself.
Get in and out gradually. One leg at a time, and stand up slowly at the end: going from vasodilated to upright is when the dizziness arrives.
Which tub, if wellbeing is the reason
The criteria change compared with someone buying for leisure. Three things matter, in this order: the position of the jets relative to the areas you care about, whether you can sit immersed up to the shoulders, and precise temperature control.

- Stay in for 20 minutes the first few times, even though the maximum for a healthy adult is 30.
- Drink half a litre before and after, and get out slowly.
- Judge the result after three or four weeks, not after one session: stiffness and sleep are things you assess over time.
The most common mistake is raising the temperature expecting more benefit: above 40 °C the body goes into stress and the relaxation disappears. The second is expecting a hot tub to deliver what only a change of habits can.
